Thoubal: The 78th Independence Day was celebrated with great zeal on Thursday at the District Headquarters in Thoubal. The main event took place at the Mini Secretariat Complex, where Deputy Commissioner A. Subhash Singh, IAS, hoisted the National Flag.

He then inspected the contingents during the march-past, led by Parade Commander Thingbaijam Kamaljit Singh, MPS, SDPO, Thoubal. The parade included seven contingents from the Home Department, a VDF band party, and six cultural troupes from schools across the district.

In his address, Deputy Commissioner A. Subhash Singh highlighted the district’s various achievements. He proudly noted that Thoubal District had been recognized as the second-best performing district in India under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan for 2020-2021. He called upon the youth and women of the district to take the lead in this campaign, encouraging them to actively participate in grassroots efforts to make the program a success. He expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the district’s success in the initiative.

Commending the district’s police force, the Deputy Commissioner acknowledged the efforts of Sr. SP Rakesh Balwan, IPS, for ensuring a smooth and peaceful general election, with no need for repolling. He credited the cooperation of local communities, clubs, political parties, and the vigilance of the police personnel for this achievement.

In the education sector, the Deputy Commissioner celebrated the district’s success, particularly noting that 94 students from government schools had excelled in the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Examination for 2023-2024. This accomplishment, he said, was the result of the dedication of government school teachers and the officials from the Zonal Education Office. The district also witnessed significant improvement in pass percentages for government schools in the HSLC and HSSLC exams for the 2023-2024 academic year. Additionally, efforts are underway to provide safe drinking water to all schools by the end of 2024 through the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED).

Regarding healthcare, the Deputy Commissioner noted the improvements made in the District Hospital, Thoubal, including the introduction of OT services, digital X-rays, ultrasounds, a patient waiting area, breastfeeding room, and a fully operational 10-bed ICU. The hospital also recently acquired a Linear Probe Ultrasound machine, with ENT endoscopy services to be added soon. He assured that all Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) were functioning efficiently, with routine immunization programs running smoothly.

Touching on environmental issues, the Deputy Commissioner urged the public to actively participate in the door-to-door waste collection initiative spearheaded by the ULB Waste Disposal Plant. He appealed to citizens to refrain from dumping waste along riverbanks and roadsides and to support the cleanliness drive by paying a reasonable fee for the waste collection services.

The Deputy Commissioner also outlined new schemes introduced in the district, such as compensation for victims of hit-and-run accidents, women empowerment projects, the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, and the IMA Nongthangleima Scheme.

The event was attended by SP Thoubal Rakesh Balwan, ADM B. Lokeshor Sharma, along with various SDOs, SDCs, DLOs, and officials and staff from the DC office in Thoubal.
