Los Angeles:“The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” an animated film based on Nintendo’s Mario video game franchise, maintained its reign at the North American box office for the fourth weekend in a row with an estimated three-day cume of 40 million U.S. dollars, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
The film from Nintendo and Illumination, being released worldwide by Universal Pictures, has grossed an estimated 490 million in North America and 532 million internationally through Sunday.
It’s the first film to pass the 1-billion-dollar mark in 2023, and the 10th animated film in history to do so.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” features an all-star voice cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario.
“Evil Dead Rise,” a supernatural horror film distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, came in second on its second weekend with 12.2 million dollars, pushing its North American total to 44.4 million dollars.
Rounding out the top three, Lionsgate’s comedy drama film “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” took in 6.8 million dollars during its debut this weekend.
