Imphal: Thadou Community International (TCI) has expressed its strong support and appreciation for the recent peace initiatives undertaken by the Government of India to restore stability in Manipur. In a statement issued on Tuesday, TCI acknowledged the significance of the decisions made during the high-level security review meeting chaired by the Union Home Minister on March 1, 2025, calling it a vital step toward addressing the challenges faced by the region’s people.

A Step Toward Stability and Peace

After nearly two years of unrest, these newly introduced measures bring renewed hope for reconciliation and rebuilding efforts in Manipur. The government’s commitment to ensuring free movement on all roads from March 8, 2025, provides much-needed relief to communities affected by prolonged disruptions. The assurance of strict action against any obstruction to public movement marks a crucial move toward restoring normalcy in the region.

Additionally, the focus on enhancing border security and dismantling networks involved in extortion and drug trafficking is a commendable step toward long-term stability. These measures will reinforce national security and contribute to the socio-economic development of future generations.

Call for Inclusive Implementation

While these initiatives are a welcome beginning, TCI underscores the need for inclusive and transparent implementation. Sustainable peace can only be achieved through dialogue, trust-building, and the fair addressing of concerns from all communities.

History has shown that post-conflict societies thrive when peace is built on justice, inclusivity, and meaningful engagement with affected communities. For Manipur to achieve lasting stability, it is crucial to adopt these globally recognized best practices. TCI urges all stakeholders—including government authorities, civil society, and community leaders—to collaborate in a spirit of cooperation. A peaceful, secure, and prosperous Manipur is achievable only through genuine commitment to dialogue and reconciliation.

Recognizing Thadou Identity and Cultural Integrity

As Manipur moves forward, it is essential to acknowledge and respect its diverse ethnic identities. The Thadou people hold a unique and independent identity, distinct from any other classification. Any misrepresentation of Thadou as part of another group does not reflect the true aspirations and interests of the Thadou community. Ensuring respect for Manipur’s diverse identities is fundamental to long-term peace and reconciliation.

Looking Ahead

In alignment with global peacebuilding principles, TCI believes that sustainable peace in Manipur requires inclusive governance, reconciliation, and respect for indigenous identities. The community remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote peace, security, and development in Manipur and beyond.

TCI also calls on the Centre to actively engage with the Thadou community to ensure their voices are heard in the decision-making process. The organization stands ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to contribute to lasting peace and development in Manipur.

Statement: “Thadou is a distinct ethnic group. Thadou is not Kuki, nor a subset of Kuki, but a separate and independent entity. Any organization that incorporates ‘Thadou’ while espousing Kuki identity and misrepresenting Thadou as part of Kuki is illegitimate and does not represent the true interests of the Thadou people.” — Thadou Convention Declaration, 2024.
