Agartala: Police on Sunday defused as many as ten crude bombs which were recovered on Saturday night from the Golchakkar area of the city under Ramnagar constituency.

One person identified as Amir Hossain, a resident of Rajnagar – the bordering hamlet of Agartala – has been arrested.

SDPO (Sadar) Ajoy Kumar Das said an investigation is on and the culprits would be booked soon. Police are looking for the source of the non-lethal bombs and it was believed that these might have been assembled to create tension in the area.

The recovery of the bombs soon after the Prime Minister left after his election campaign and hours before the arrival of Home Minister Amit Shah triggered tension across the city.

According to police reports, at least five CPI-M supporters were brutally beaten up and several houses of party cadres were set on fire in the Ranirbazar area of Majlishpur constituency on Saturday night soon after the election rally of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in support of the information minister of the outgoing government Sushanta Chowdhury.

“Assam Chief Minister and Sushanta Chowdhury have instigated their cadres against opposition parties fearing the defeat of BJP. Earlier, on several occasions, the minister was found involved in violence, and under his leadership, on the day of the poll announcement a Congress rally was attacked in three places in the constituency, and AICC general secretary Dr Ajoy Kumar was assaulted along with 30 others, but ECI is not taking action against Chowdhury,” alleged CPI-M leader Pabitra Kar.

Later he alleged BJP miscreants disturbed a CPI-M public meeting in the nearby Khayerpur area, and central forces somehow controlled the situation but no legal action has been initiated against them by the local police. ECI has been assuring to hold a free, fair, and peaceful election in Tripura, but the ground situation is indicating otherwise, he said.

The election machinery in most of the areas is working openly for the ruling BJP and opposition workers have been getting the continuous threat, Kar said, adding, “We have been demanding strong action against the listed criminals, especially in Majlishpur, Mohanpur, Khayerpur, Suryamaninagar, Sonamura, Bishalgarh, Belonia, and Hrishyamukh constituencies, and changing the commanding police officers of those areas but election officials are found ignoring following the pressure of BJP.”

The BJP leaders were found openly saying they will have a mechanism to identify the electors who vote against BJP and the persons identified as voting for CPI-M and Congress would be dealt with seriously.
