Imphal: Hundreds of students participated in a rally to commemorate the 70th Wildlife Week Celebration 2024. Organized by the Wildlife Wing of the Forest Department, Government of Manipur, in collaboration with the Central Forest Division, the rally aimed to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and promote eco-friendly practices, highlighting the importance of protecting the nation’s natural heritage.
The rally began at the Western Gate of Kangla and concluded at Hapta Kangjeibung. Students from various educational institutions across Imphal took part, carrying vibrant banners and chanting slogans in support of wildlife protection. The students also created posters featuring endangered species, spreading messages about the urgent need for conservation.
The event was inaugurated by Soreiphy Vashum, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), who encouraged students to become proactive advocates for conservation. Joykumar, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), also addressed the gathering, stressing the vital role of wildlife in maintaining ecological balance and urging collective responsibility in safeguarding these resources. He called on students to engage in wildlife conservation with a sense of environmental stewardship.
This rally was part of the broader Wildlife Week celebrations, which run from October 2 to October 8, under the theme “Wildlife Conservation through Co-existence.” The theme emphasizes the need for harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife. Through workshops, exhibitions, and awareness programs, the Forest Department seeks to promote sustainability and reinforce the message that humans must share the planet with all living beings.
The main goal of Wildlife Week is to inspire youth participation in environmental conservation. The event stresses that every small action contributes to protecting biodiversity, with the theme encouraging sustainable practices that align with conservation goals. The celebration aims to foster a future where both humanity and wildlife thrive together, as noted in a press release by the Divisional Forest Officer, Central Forest Division, Government of Manipur.
