Imphal: Normal life was affected in the state due to a 24 hour strike called over the death of a medical student.
A 24-hour total shutdown was imposed by Justice For Sanaton Athokpam (JFSA) from Monday night and concluded today at 1800 hours.
The JFSA was unhappy with the delay in the probe of the death of the medical student who was found dead at his hostel room at RIMS on March 15 last. Strike supporters stopped vehicles and put barricades on the road to stop movement of people and vehicles.
There was no report of any untoward incident and all business establishments were closed down. All passenger services were also cancelled.
The strike was supported by various organizations of the state including students’ bodies like All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Apunba Ireibakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS), Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA), Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), and Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK) .
The protestors said the government has not yet established the fact and circumstances leading to the death of the student. Though he was found hanging in his room , his hands were found tied.
