Stalin pays tributes to Mandal, who championed the cause of OBCs, on his death anniv

Mr Mandal headed the Commission established in 1979 by the Janata Party government under Prime Minister Morarji Desai with a mandate to "identify the socially or educationally backward classes" and to consider the question of reservations for people to address caste discrimination.

In a tweet, he said With his relentless efforts for the welfare of OBCs
who constitute majority of population yet largely under-represented,
Mr B.P.Mandal has made his name a symbol of Social Justice.
“To strive to implement all his recommendations would be the ideal
tribute to the radical icon”, he said.
Mr Mandal headed the Commission established in 1979 by the Janata
Party government under Prime Minister Morarji Desai with a mandate
to “identify the socially or educationally backward classes” and to
consider the question of reservations for people to address caste
discrimination.
The Commission’s report had recommended that members of Other
Backward Classes (OBC) be granted reservations to 27% of jobs under
the Central government and public sector undertakings, thus making
the total number of reservations for SC, ST and OBC to 49%.
