Colombo: Sri Lanka has given the nod to begin a freight transportation service between its northern port of Kankesanthurai and Tamil Nadu, which is separated from the island nation by a strip of sea, a Minister said in remarks published on Tuesday.

The Daily Mirror quoted Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda said he will make arrangements to begin initial work on the service soon.

He said the service will pave the way for the transportation of fuel, medicines, and fertilizer between the two destinations.
“It will be possible to transport these goods at a lower cost,” the Minister said.

The Minister also said that air transportation will start between Palaly in Jaffna for Trichi and Chennai in Tamil Nadu on July 1.

Sri Lanka is battling severe shortages of essential commodities including food, fuel, and medicines in the wake of an unprecedented economic crisis that has led to a dollar crunch.
