Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister and supreme leader of the National People’s Party (NPP), Conrad K Sangma, on Thursday revealed that some leaders of the opposition Trinamool Congress (AITC) have voiced their desire to join NPP.
“We (NPP) are getting positive response. People are showing faith in NPP. People have seen the work of the government and they are happy to work with NPP,” he said, after felicitating an AITC member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), who switched over to NPP.
Marak is known to be a close-aide of former Chief Minister and incumbent Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma, who had switched over from the Congress to AITC.
“There are many people who are contacting us. Not only in Garo Hills, but even people in Khasi and Jaintia Hills are continuously in touch with many of our leaders. We are happy that more and more people are supporting us and joining the party,” the NPP Supremo revealed.
On crack within the AITC, Sangma said, “We have to wait and watch how things go, but definitely, there seems to be some cracks appearing and we will see how the situation unfolds.”
The AITC became Meghalaya’s principal opposition party overnight, after former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and 11 of his loyalist Legislators switched over from the Congress late last year.Â
