Gangtok: Sikkim would like to be involved in the activities of the North Eastern Space Application Centre Society and guidance to adopt further technology, Chief Minister PS Tamang has said.
Tamang was speaking during a two-day conference of North Eastern Chief Ministers, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Shillong.
The Chief Minister placed some proposals for the state, including Technological modernization, attracting Asian investors and restoration of subsidies provided to the hotel industry earlier.
”Sikkim would like to be involved in the activities of the North Eastern Space Application Centre Society and guidance to adopt further technology. Earlier incentives of 33 per cent to the hotel industry may be restored,” Mr Tamang said. He mentioned extreme digital gaps in the North-East region. Adequate and easy availability of internet connections through sea routes in the Bay of Bengal can help.
He requested Mr Shah to increase the internet bandwidth from the existing 10 MBPS to at least 1 GBPS and for an independent BSNL circle for the state.
Referring and appreciating previous incentives provided to industries, the CM said those brought micro, medium and small industries creating employment, technology, knowledge among the local entrepreneurs and revenue for North Eastern States, setting up the pace. ”We need to bring more partners and actors from the South East Asian countries, including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and others. This will help in realizing the goals of India’s Act East Policy, declared by PM Narendra Modi’.
Tamang asserted that it will also accrue advantages of the India –ASEAN Free Trade Agreement and other regional cooperation agreements. He emphasised fresh interventions in the field of Naturopathy, Wellness, Floriculture, Horticulture, Bamboo and ethnic fashion designing.
”Sikkim is the first state to appoint Economic Revival Committee in May 2020 to study the impact of the pandemic in various economic and commercial sectors and socio-cultural activities in the state. The aspects of Atmanirbhar Bharat announced by the Prime Minister have been ingrained in this report,” said the CM.
He also informed about Sikkim striving to transform itself into an education Hub of Eastern and North-Eastern India and doing relatively well, as reported by 2019-20 Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE).
