Gangtok,: Highlighting the importance of improved connectivity for the Himalayan region, the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), spoke about the ongoing Sivok – Rangpo Railway Line Project, describing it as a transformative infrastructure initiative that will significantly enhance connectivity, tourism and economic development in the state.

The Chief Minister made these remarks during an interaction in Gangtok with a media delegation from Meghalaya, currently visiting Sikkim as part of a press tour organised by the Press Information Bureau Shillong.

Golay said the railway project will mark a historic milestone for the Himalayan state, as it will connect Sikkim to the national railway network for the first time. He noted that improved rail connectivity will significantly ease travel to the mountainous state, benefiting both residents and visitors while boosting tourism and economic activity.

The Sivok – Rangpo railway line, being constructed by the Northeast Frontier Railway, spans approximately 45 kilometres. The ambitious project involves complex engineering works including 14 tunnels and 23 bridges, reflecting the challenging terrain through which the railway line is being constructed.

Golay noted that once completed, the railway line will significantly improve transportation and logistics in the region by facilitating the movement of both passengers and goods. He added that enhanced rail connectivity will also strengthen tourism, create employment opportunities and support overall regional development.

Golay further informed the visiting journalists that work on the project is progressing steadily and expressed hope that the railway line will be completed by 2027, which will help address long-standing communication challenges faced by the mountainous state that currently relies primarily on road connectivity.

He also said that the project reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen connectivity and accelerate development across the northeastern region. According to the Chief Minister, improving infrastructure in remote and border states has been a key priority under the Prime Minister’s leadership, with several major road, rail and air connectivity projects being implemented to integrate the region more closely with the rest of the country.

Golay emphasised that the railway project will play a crucial role in transforming connectivity and unlocking new economic opportunities for Sikkim, while also strengthening tourism and regional development in the Himalayan region.
