Senapati truckers bodies agree to withdraw steering down agitation

Imphal: Minister Transport of Manipur, Khashim Vashum on Monday chaired a meeting with the Senapati District Trucks Owners Association (SDTOA) and Senapati District Truck Drivers Union (SDTDU) in Senapati district HQ during which the SDTOA and the SDTDU agreed to withdraw the present steering down agitation with effect from February 27.

The meeting was also attended by MLA 47-Karong, J Kamo Sha; Deputy Commissioner Senapati, Mamoni Doley; ADM Senapati, PP Ronald Pao and Additional SP Senapati, ML Kaisungbou.

During the meeting, it was highlighted that the State Police has arrested one active member of the KYKL organization from Imphal West namely RK Jitensana alias Nanao, 43 years, of Pangei Leiram Mapan near MPTC Gate, who is suspected to be involved in the assault of truck drivers at Sekmai on the night of February 16, 2024, and that further investigation is under processed.

It was also noted that to give due security to the trucks plying on National Highway 2, ROP shall be provided by the government.

Further during the meeting, it was also deliberated and agreed upon that in relation to the unauthorized collection of taxes on sands, the government shall take strict action against such illegal collection.

It may be mentioned that the present steering down agitation was called by SDTOA and SDTDU due to the physical assault on local truck drivers on the 16th of February 2024 at Sekmai at around 10 pm. As a result of this agitation, no loaded trucks were allowed to ply on National Highway 2 since 18th February.
