Imphal: The inaugural function of SAKSHAM 2026 on the theme “Conserve Oil and Gas, Go Green” was held today at Manipur College, Pishumthong, Singjamei, Imphal West.

The fortnight-long programme (SAKSHAM 2026) will be observed from 1st to 15th February 2026, being organised by Public Sector Oil and Gas Companies operating in Manipur under the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India.

The campaign was inaugurated by K. Bono Singh, Director, Consumers Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (CAF&PD), Government of Manipur.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, K. Bono Singh highlighted that exploration and extraction of natural resources involve high costs. He emphasized the urgent need to create awareness among the public on the judicious and responsible use of limited natural resources such as oil and natural gas, so that these resources can be preserved for future generations.

The Chief Guest further stated that developed countries are increasingly promoting renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, as well as electric vehicles, instead of depending solely on non-renewable energy. He pointed out that global oil and natural gas reserves may last only 50–70 years, while coal reserves may last 70–100 years, underscoring the importance of conservation and responsible consumption.

Referring to global statistics, Bono Singh said that India is currently the third-largest consumer of oil and gas after the USA and China, and may become the largest consumer in the next 20–30 years. As India does not produce sufficient crude oil to meet its demand, a large quantity is imported, resulting in huge expenditure. He added that this is the reason why SAKSHAM Fortnight is being observed across the country to spread awareness on fuel conservation.

The function was presided over by Professor Aribam Devadash Sharma, Principal, Manipur College. Rajkumar Mohen Singh, State Level Coordinator, Oil Industry Manipur, and Haobam Bobo Singh, OSD, CAF&PD, attended the programme as Guests of Honour.

As part of the event, students, teachers, and representatives of Public Sector Oil and Gas Companies collectively took a pledge under SAKSHAM 2026 to conserve oil and gas for a sustainable future.
