President Murmu plants red sandalwood sapling on Itanagar Raj Bhavan premises

The plantation programme was organised on the front lawns of the main building of Raj Bhavan, where the President planted the sapling of ‘Pterocarpus Santalinus’, commonly known as red sandalwood.

Itanagar: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday planted a red sandalwood sapling in the Itanagar Raj Bhavan premises before leaving for the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly to address the Special Session of the House. The state governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik, attended the event. 

The plantation programme was organised on the front lawns of the main building of Raj Bhavan, where the President planted the sapling of ‘Pterocarpus Santalinus’, commonly known as red sandalwood.

This species of timber is one of the most valuable plant species found in southern parts of India and is generally used for medicinal purposes (as an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, tonic, etc., besides furniture making.

The President of India thus carried on the “exclusive” tradition of planting saplings in the Raj Bhavan premises by visiting dignitaries, a communiqué from the governor’s office said. 

The President was on a two-day maiden visit to Arunachal Pradesh. On Monday, she graced the 37th Statehood Day celebrations of Arunachal Pradesh and attended the civic reception hosted in her honour by the state government at the celebration ground, IG Park.

After addressing the Special Assembly session, the President flew back to the national capital.
