Shillong: Meghalaya’s opposition Congress on Tuesday withdrew the resolution seeking removal of Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh from his post.

“There was a conscious decision of the Congress Legislature Party that since our points were already to a great extent made through just submissions, therefore, further pressing for a resolution to be taken up in the House is felt not necessary,” Leader of opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma told reporters.

He said the decision to withdraw the resolution was taken at the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting on Tuesday morning.
Sangma said communication has been sent to the Assembly secretariat about the party’s decision to withdraw the resolution.

“Issues tabled for discussions (by the opposition) to be considered for discussion were admitted by the Speaker,” the veteran Congress legislator said.

Asked what was the reason for withdrawing the resolution, the veteran Congress leader said, “The intent was only to send a message and it has already been achieved.”

Moreover, he said that a number of issues have been properly articulated in the larger interest of the people and the state.
On September 2, four opposition Congress legislators, Zenith Sangma, Himalaya M Shangpliang, George B Lyngdoh and Kimfa S Marbaniang had submitted a resolution seeking for the removal of Speaker Lyngdoh from his post.
