Shillong: Ruling National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Abdus Saleh emerged winner in Rajabala assembly byelection in Meghalaya, even as NPP candidate Pyniaid Sing Syiem and United Democratic Party (UDP) nominee Eugeneson Lyngdoh Mawphlang are leading in Mawrynkneng and Mawphlang assembly seats respectively, election officials said.
Saleh defeated Congress opponent Hashina Yasmin Mondal by a margin of 1,927 votes. In the Mawrynkneng seat, Pyniaid Sing Syiem of NPP was leading against his arch-rival Highlander Kharmlaki by a margin of 1,816 votes, Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor said.
Syiem is the incumbent Chairman of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Former Indian footballer Eugeneson Lyngdoh Mawphlang was leading by a margin of 4,401 votes against his Congress opponent Kennedy Cornelius Khyriem from the Mawphlang assembly seat.
The byelections in the three Assembly constituencies were necessitated following the deaths of three sitting MLAs, David A Nongrum of Mawryngkneng, Dr Azad Zaman of Rajabala and Syntar Klas Sunn of Mawphlang.
