Gangtok: Praising the NDA government at the centre for its handling of the economy, renowned economist and BJP legislator Ashok Kumar Lahiri has said the country has seen growth despite a lot of uncertainties like the Russia-Ukraine war.
“Despite uncertainties like the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war, Covid pandemic and inflation, the government has still managed to ensure economic growth,” said Lahiri, former Chief Economic Adviser to the government of India.
The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in its December 2022 meeting forecast real GDP growth for 2022-23 at 6.8 percent.
The MPC, which held it latest meeting earlier this month, pegged real GDP growth for FY24 at 6.4 percent.
Lahiri, now on a visit to Sikkim to discuss the salient features of the latest union budget, said it was a very important document. “The Union Government spends one-sixth of the total spending by the pubic through annual budgets,” he said on Saturday.
On being asked to suggest steps through which Sikkim could enhance revenue, ‘The state can do it through Property Tax and Excise”.
He lauded the Himalayan state for its stress on organic farming.
