Imphal: Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced on Tuesday that villages not recognized or registered by the state government will no longer receive government benefits, including programs like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), and essential services such as power and water supply. He made the statement during the Grand Finale of the 70th Wildlife Week Celebration 2024 at the City Convention Centre in Imphal, an event organized by the Forest Department.

In his address, the Chief Minister emphasized that both politicians and officials must act with sincerity and possess a clear understanding of the region’s history. He attributed present-day issues to past mistakes and urged government officers, particularly those in the Revenue and Forest departments, to perform their duties with dedication and within the bounds of the Constitution and relevant laws, such as The Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act and various Forest Acts.

On the topic of global warming and natural calamities, N. Biren Singh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign for its foresight. He also highlighted earlier initiatives such as the “Green Imphal” campaign (2004) and the “Green Manipur” mission, stating that true societal change must come from within. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting and conserving wildlife, forests, and water bodies in the state. The Chief Minister further proposed the development of a wildlife sanctuary or a dedicated conservation area and instructed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) to take action.

Singh commended the people of Ukhrul district for their efforts in wildlife conservation, including their decision to ban hunting and the use of weapons for animal killing. He suggested a campaign encouraging the voluntary surrender of weapons like catapults and airguns used for poaching in the hill districts. Additionally, he mentioned the government’s upcoming initiative to rear Mithun (a semi-domesticated animal) for consumption as a measure to reduce hunting of wild animals.

In his presidential speech, Forest and Environment Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh highlighted the importance of raising public awareness about wildlife conservation through rallies and campaigns. He underscored the crucial role that coexistence with plants and animals plays in the survival of the human race.

The event, attended by ministers, Members of Parliament, MLAs, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, administrative secretaries, forest department officials, and school students, concluded with the distribution of prizes to winners of various competitions held during the week-long celebration.
