Agartala: National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) top leader Jackob Hrangkhal, who was brought to Agartala from Aizawl on Friday, was remanded to police custody for five days by a local court.

Hrangkhal was arrested in Mizoram on Wednesday and brought to Agartala by a team of Tripura police on a transit remand.

According to police, Jackob was wanted in connection with a case pending at New Capital Complex police station regarding extortion demand of rupees one crore from one Subir Kumar Debbarma of Kunjaban in the city, for which a case was registered under various sections of IPC and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

After his detention at Aizawl by Mizoram police, a team of Tripura police led by DSP Jayanta Karmakar brought the accused Jackob Hrangkhal to the New Capital Complex police station.

Police said, “Jackob is self-styled president of NLFT as per the extremist list maintained by concerned Government authorities and he was also wanted in connection with a Non-Bailable Warrant of Teliamura Police Station for long.”
He has been interrogated by a team of special branch police and other central agencies.

The NLFT was formed in 1989 and set up camps in different parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar before it was banned by the Union Home Ministry in 1991.

A large number of its leaders and cadres surrendered over the years with their arms and ammunition, leading to the outfit almost becoming non-existence. However, a few of the cadres have been trying to revive the outfit and Jackob was one of them.
