London, Sep 5 (UNI) Either Liz Truss or Indian-origin Rishi Sunak will be announced as the new leader of the Conservative Party later Monday.
The winner becomes prime minister on Tuesday, the BBC reported. The new prime minister and Boris Johnson will travel to meet the Queen at Balmoral in Scotland on Tuesday to complete the transfer of power.
Truss and Sunak have spent the summer vying for votes among Tory members.
The results of the ballot will be announced after noon (5 pm India time) at the QE2 conference centre here.
Whoever wins will come under immediate pressure to announce a plan to tackle soaring energy bills, the BBC added.
It’s understood that a freeze on energy bills is one of the options being looked at Truss, the frontrunner, has promised to announce further help to shield consumers within a week of taking over.
