Imphal: The Manipuri film industry is mourning the loss of Debkumar Bose, a trailblazer in Manipuri cinema. Bose, who directed Matamgi Manipur (1972)—the first full-length Manipuri feature film—passed away at Bellevue Hospital at 8:00 AM on October 18, 2024. His passing marks the end of an era for Manipuri cinema, a world he helped shape with his visionary direction and deep cultural insight.
Born on September 21, 1933, Debkumar Bose was the son of Debaki Bose, a legendary Indian filmmaker whose film Seeta (1934) was the first Indian movie to be featured at an international film festival, the Venice Film Festival. This cinematic lineage influenced Debkumar’s profound understanding of storytelling and his pursuit of artistic innovation.
Although Bose had limited proficiency in the local language, Meiteilon, he embraced the challenge of directing Matamgi Manipur, a film that explored the complexities of Manipuri society. The film depicted the conflict between tradition and modernization, focusing on the erosion of family structures under the weight of modern pressures. His directorial approach was subtle and emotionally resonant, steering clear of melodrama. This sensitivity made his work distinctive both regionally and nationally. Matamgi Manipur remains a foundational work in Manipuri cinema, and the film’s recognition with a Presidential Medal speaks to its lasting influence on the culture and cinematic history of the state.
Before his monumental contribution to Manipuri cinema, Debkumar Bose had already earned respect as a filmmaker in Bengali cinema, collaborating with icons like Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Mrinal Sen. Among his notable works was Dadathakur (1962), a biographical film about the poet and satirist Sarat Chandra Pandit, which highlighted Bose’s gift for portraying complex characters and narratives. Throughout his career, Bose received numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal for Matamgi Manipur, underscoring his pivotal role in laying the groundwork for a thriving Manipuri film industry.
In tribute to his memory, the MSFDS, along with members of Film Forum Manipur, organized a candlelight vigil at the memorial stone of Manipuri cinema, located at the MSFDS complex. The solemn event served as a heartfelt homage to the filmmaker who pioneered Manipuri cinema. Members of the film community gathered to offer prayers and pay their respects, ensuring his legacy will endure.
