Imphal: Lok Sabha MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has urged Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to take decisive action against any blockages on highways, emphasizing the need to use the state’s legitimate authority to ensure uninterrupted movement.
Dr. Bimol, who met with the Governor at Raj Bhavan on Thursday, welcomed the Central government’s efforts to facilitate free travel and discussed the ongoing crisis in Manipur, focusing on ways to restore peace and normalcy.
During the meeting, the MP raised several key concerns, including the financial impact of the crisis and the need for adequate budgetary measures to address it. He highlighted that, under the constitutional framework, the state police should be primarily responsible for maintaining law and order, with central forces like the CRPF, Army, and paramilitary acting in a supportive role.
Dr. Bimol expressed concern over the diminished role of the Manipur Police during the crisis and called for steps to restore and strengthen the force’s legitimacy and operational capacity. He also emphasized the need for a balanced disarmament process in both the hills and the valley.
The MP raised the case of Laishram Kamalbabu and appealed to the Governor to intervene and address the concerns of the missing man’s family. Additionally, he recommended appointing local advisors to bridge communication gaps and address public grievances.
On the issue of illegal drugs, Dr. Bimol inquired about actions taken to combat poppy cultivation, synthetic drugs, and illicit trafficking in the state.
Olivia Thounaojam, the MP’s spouse, also met with the Governor and urged him to take measures to support women and children affected by the crisis, particularly those in relief camps. In response, the Governor briefed her on the steps being taken to address these concerns.
