Shillong: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold a road show in the state capital and address an election meeting in Tura, the major town in the Garo Hills in a bid to garner support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BJP has for the first time fielded candidates to contest for all the 60 assembly seats in Meghalaya, which goes to the polls on February 27.

According to BJP sources, the Prime Minister is expected to arrive here after 11 am and lay floral wreaths at the statues of legendary freedom fighters U Tirot Sing, U Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma at the State Central Library premises and thereafter proceed to the main commercial centre of Police Bazar in the city to address a roadside rally.

“It is for the first time in the history that the Prime Minister of the country will do a road show. I think all the citizens, especially those residing in Shillong, would like to see and hear his speech because he is not only the Prime Minister of India but is also a world leader. He is the president of the G20,” State BJP president, Ernest Mawrie, who is also a contesting candidate, said.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to fly to Tura from Shillong to address an election meeting at the Alotgre playground.

The state sports department had denied permission for the PM’s election rally at the PA Sangma stadium at Tura, which is under construction.

On the other hand, security forces carried out mock drills on the streets of Shillong and Tura on Thursday ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.
