Mock exercise on earthquake scenario conducted in Manipur

Imphal: A Table Top Exercise for State Level Mock Exercise on Earthquake Scenario was conducted at the Conference Hall of Old Secretariat, Babupara, Imphal West, on Tuesday.

The aim of the Mock Exercise was to check preparedness at the State Level and to give awareness to the people about the response at the time of earthquake. Stakeholders like Police, Army, Paramilitary Forces, Medical Departments, Electricity Department, Assam Rifles, District Administrations etc. were trained in order to assess response to the earthquake disaster situation.

The Tabletop mock exercise based on earthquake scenarios was jointly conducted in collaboration with the Manipur State Disaster Management Authority (MSDA) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi.

Consultant, National Disaster Management Authority, New Delhi, Maj. Gen. Sudhir Bahl, (Retd) said that the mock exercise had been conducted jointly with Manipur State Disaster Management Authority to take care of earthquake disasters that happen in the state of Manipur.

He also said that at the Table Top Exercise, all discussed various scenarios and all the representatives will exhibit their knowledge and expertise. Manipur which falls in seismic Zone V is highly prone to earthquakes and preparedness is a must to save lives and properties.

Addl. Chief Secretary, Relief & Disaster Management M.H Khan, said Mock Drill Exercise will be held on April 21 next. For Imphal East, the mock exercise will be conducted at JNIMS Hospital and for Imphal West at CIPET building, Takyelpat, Imphal.

Mock Exercise on earthquake will also be organized at DC complex of Thoubal and Bishnupur respectively. All stakeholders, district administrations, Medical Department, Electricity Department, Paramilitary Forces, Army, Assam Rifles, etc are expected to participate in this exercise. Khan said that the training mock exercise was held to give awareness to all.

All government functionaries, volunteers and officials were trained on how to take precautionary measures and handle various dangerous activities. He also said that all district officials were trained recently and an Incident Response System was also formed.

Deputy Commissioner of each district will be the Commander with many sections under him/her. The representatives were also briefed about their preparedness and roles taken up in their concerned areas.

During the exercise, an evaluation of the preparedness of the concerned district was carried out and also gave awareness to the participants based on National Disaster Management Guidelines.
