Imphal: Delhi-based Meitei civil society organizations have strongly criticized the Delhi Police for allowing a protest rally by the Kuki-Zo community on Saturday, despite assurances that permission would not be granted.
In a joint statement, the Delhi Manipur Society (DeMas), Meitei Heritage Society (MHS), and Ningols United Progressive Initiative (NUPI) expressed their disapproval, stating that although the Delhi Police had assured them that no consent would be given for the protest in the interest of national security, permission was ultimately granted.
The organizations emphasized that they had submitted sufficient documentary evidence to the Delhi Police, calling for a comprehensive investigation into the protest’s nature and verification of elements they deemed anti-national. Despite receiving verbal assurances from the police that the gathering at Jantar Mantar would not be allowed, the groups expressed deep disappointment that the protest proceeded, warning that such events could be exploited by anti-India forces to further aggravate the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
The three organizations urged the Delhi Police and the Ministry of Home Affairs to re-evaluate the protocols for allowing protests, especially those perceived as detrimental to the nation’s image.
Highlighting the sensitive situation in Manipur, they underscored their high expectations of the Centre and stressed the need for responsible decision-making by authorities like the Delhi Police in handling such matters.
