Shillong: North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) Vice Chancellor, Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla on Wednesday said that the university is awaiting the decision of the Union Ministry of Education on whether to regularise its 700 odd contractual workers.
“We have communicated to the ministry of education and it is upto the ministry to give its decision,” Shukla said in the wake of the ongoing protest launched by contractual workers outside the varsity administrative building.
The workers under the banner of All North Eastern Hill University Workers’ Union are demanding that their job is regularized.
“Decisions such as regularizing of its contractual workers cannot be taken by the university and needs the approval from the ministry. However, the contractual workers are being provided various benefits like their regular counterparts,” the Vice Chancellor said.
Moreover, he said that the central minimum wages salary for all the contractual workers is being implemented from 2018, besides benefits like variable dearness allowance, Employees Provident Fund and Employment State Insurance (ESI) scheme are also being extended to this category of workers.
