Shillong: The Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya on Wednesday remanded State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Vice President, Bernard N. Marak to 14-day judicial custody in a prostitution racket case, an official said.

However, the same court has also allowed the Investigating Officer of Tura to arrest Marak in another case related to the seizure of explosives from his farmhouse at Edenbari.

Police seized 35 gelatine sticks, 100 detonators apart from four crossbows, and 15 arrows from Marak’s farmhouse on July 29.

A police official said Marak will be arrested later tonight from Tura Jail and produced in court on Thursday.

Marak, a former militant leader of the now-disbanded militant outfit Achik Nationalist Voluntary Council (B), was arrested on July 27, by Uttar Pradesh police from Hapur district after Meghalaya police issued a nationwide alert against him.

The senior BJP leader, who is also a sitting member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, was on the run after police raided his farmhouse from where six minors were rescued and 73 people were arrested on July 22.

Meghalaya police have booked Marak under the Immoral Trafficking Act, 1956, the Explosives Substances Act, 1908, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
