Shillong: The Meghalaya government on Wednesday decided to cancel the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the power developer signed with M/s Athena Power Private Limited to implement the Kynshi Stage I project and also the Kynshi State II Hydel Project signed with Jaypee Group.

Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Power, Prestone Tynsong said that the two power developers have shown their inability to continue and of course, in the Kynshi Stage II it is mainly due to the Uranium deposit.

He informed that the developers expressed their inability to continue the project ultimately leading the government to cancel the MOAs signed. The Deputy Chief Minister said that the government will abandon the Kynshi Stage II Power Project since Uranium deposits were founds in the area.

Tynsong informed that as far as the MoA signed with North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) to implement the Wah Umiam Stage III which was signed in 2012 the implementation of the project is at an advanced state and land acquisition is in full swing.

“Once it is completed the concerned district administration will hand over the land and the project will start,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.

Tynsong informed that the Umiam Stage I and II the implementations of the project is in the stage of finalisation of the agreement and soon it will be taken to the cabinet for signing of MoA. Umiam Stage I is of 50 MW capacity and Umiam Stage II is 100 MW.

Meanwhile, Tynsong informed that the MoA signed for a 240 MW Thermal Power Project with Dharampal Satya Pal in Nangalbibra, East Garo Hills, its documentation is on. He also informed that Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) will implement the Myntdu-Leshka Stage III project.

Tynsong said that the experts of the MeECL are on the job to prepare details.

On the concern for the project that unscientific coal mining upstream of the project has reduced the Ph value of the water in Myntdu, making it acidic, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “ after the NGT banned unscientific coal mining and subsequently Supreme Court allowing mining activities but with highly mechanised system in place, the water will be fine.” Tynsong said that through the private developers the state will get 300 MW of power.
