Imphal: As half of the population belongs to the male gender, sensitizing only the female counterpart, cannot bring any gender equality in the society, Prof N Promidini, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, Manipur University, said here on Tuesday.
Participating in a discussion on “Understanding and tackling the challenges concerning women”, organised by the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture, Manipur Chapter in association with The Ng Mani College, Khurai, the Professor said despite the progress made toward ‘Women empowerment, there is a still a long way to go as they still face subjugation and discrimination in every field.
Continuing patriarchy in our society has reinforced structural violence against women by projecting discriminatory gender roles that often place limitations on how far they can go. Excluding them from collective resources and decision-making paves the way for male domination, the academician noted.
Promodini said, “If we want to prevent and bring an end to the violence against women and girls, we have to provide the same and essential economic status and education to them”.
Moreover, she said, societal behaviour and mindset towards women must be changed. “For this to happen, we need mass and regular sensitisation with the participation of the male gender”. Only then, we can bring about an inclusive and progressive society, and the true meaning of women empowerment, she added.
