Imphal: The Manipur police announced on Saturday that they are preparing to take stringent action against illegal taxation and extortion, with a focus on market areas and national highways.
The announcement comes in response to a rise in criminal activity across the state, particularly in the valley regions, where incidents of kidnapping, bomb attacks, and shootings have targeted various individuals, including businesspeople.
During a press briefing at the Imphal West District police headquarters, K. Kabib, IPS, IGP (Intelligence), highlighted that ongoing ethnic violence, which erupted on May 3 of last year, has contributed to an increase in illegal taxation and extortion by both underground groups and local gangs, exploiting the unstable law and order situation.
Kabib explained that these illegal activities have severely impacted the local economy, affecting businesses, ordinary citizens, and even educational institutions. In response, the police department has set up an Anti-Extortion Cell, led by the ADG (Law and Order), with all zonal IGs as members.
The officer further advised the public to immediately inform the nearest police stations if any such incidents occurred so that they could take action.
