Imphal: The College of Fisheries, Lembucherra, Tripura under Central Agriculture University, Imphal in association with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur has conducted a one-day workshop on “Technology dissemination and capacity building for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture with local resources in Manipur” here on Friday.
Around fifty participants including forty fish farmers from five valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching have participated in the workshop. The workshop is an initiative of Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice Chancellor of Central Agriculture University, Imphal.
Prof. Ratan Kumar Saha, Dean, College of Fisheries, Tripura, Dr. S. Basanta Singh, Director of Research, Central Agriculture University, Imphal and Khamsing Ahum, Additional Director of Fisheries, Manipur have inaugurated the workshop. Prof. Ratan Kumar Saha said that the objective of holding the one-day workshop is to disseminate scientific technology in fisheries and aquaculture developed by the College of Fisheries, Lembucherra under Centre of Excellence in Fisheries & Aquaculture Biotechnology project in order to promote capacity building for sustainable fisheries with local resources in Manipur.

Two technical sessions were held during the workshop. In the first session, Prof. Ratan Kumar Saha delivered on ‘CAU technologies in strengthening the fisheries and aquaculture sector in North East – Role of College of Fisheries, CAU, Imphal’. In the second session, Dr. Pradyut Biswas, Assistant Professor, College of Fisheries, Lembucherra lectured on ‘Mass seed production of Pengba (Osteobrama belangeri), Pabda (Ompok bimaculatus), Reba (C. reba)’ and ‘Fish feed development using local resources.’ Dr. Gushienzed Waikhom, Associate Professor of College of Fisheries, Lembucherra also delivered on ‘Entrepreneurship opportunities in fisheries and aquaculture – Role of COF, Lembucherra.’ Director of Fisheries, Manipur H. Balkrisna Singh also joined the technical sessions and interacted with the participants and resourced persons.
After the workshop, the participants were taken to the Central Fish Farm of the Central Agriculture University at Lamphelpat and demonstrated breeding of Pabda fish. Thereafter, the team visited FRP Hatchery at the complex of DFO, Imphal West and witnessed breeding of Kuri fish (labeo gonius).
