Imphal: Amid the ongoing turmoil in Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in restoring peace during the 78th Independence Day celebration at the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, Singh stressed that Manipur belongs to all 34 recognised communities that have coexisted harmoniously for generations. “Manipur is not just for the Meiteis, Nagas, or any single group. It is a beautiful garden comprising communities like the Tangkhul, Meitei, Meitei Pangal, Vaiphei, Paite, Zomi, Hmar, Simte, Poumai, and others,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister noted that the participation of school students, police, and armed personnel, including contingents from Arunachal Pradesh IRB, underscored the unity and strength of the nation. “The celebration of Independence Day with such diverse participation symbolizes ‘One India, Strong India, United India’,” he added.
Singh reaffirmed his government’s commitment to restoring peace, stressing that the state’s unity is its best defense against forces attempting to destabilize it. He urged the people to reject divisive political agendas and stand united for a peaceful and united Manipur.

Reflecting on the state’s role in India’s freedom struggle, Singh noted that during the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War, Manipur’s forefathers bravely resisted British forces. He highlighted the need to work together, free from personal or political agendas, to overcome the current challenges.
Singh also outlined the vision for India’s future, emphasizing the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047 under the “Viksit Bharat” initiative. The Chief Minister mentioned efforts to grow India’s economy to $30 trillion by 2047, while emphasizing the continuation of the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign as part of the ongoing Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

He further detailed initiatives for the welfare of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by the May 3, 2023, incident. Singh mentioned that IDPs from both affected communities are being provided shelter, prefabricated housing, and essential supplies, with benefits distributed to 4 lakh beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer.
Additionally, Singh inaugurated eight new schemes, including a special package for start-ups employing IDPs, and initiatives like the CM Yarn Scheme, Revised Comic Textbooks, and the Sportspersons Livelihood Scheme.

The Chief Minister also shed light on various developmental projects under the “Viksit Bharat, Vikshit Manipur” initiative. Among the key projects are two National Highways (Imphal-Jiribam and Ukhrul-Toloi-Tadubi), the Imphal Ring Road Project, and the World’s Tallest Pier Railway Bridge at Noney. Singh announced that the Imphal-Jiribam Railway project, connecting Manipur’s capital with the rest of the country, is nearing completion.
Addressing the aftermath of natural disasters, Singh assured the government’s continued support in rebuilding houses and repairing roads and bridges damaged by floods and hailstorms.

He also highlighted improvements in healthcare infrastructure, with foundation stones laid for 11 facilities under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission and the Emergency Covid Response Plan.
To support those affected by recent violence, the government is providing counseling services to mitigate the psychological impact. Singh also highlighted ongoing digitization efforts in the state, including the launch of the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) in the State Assembly.

Concluding his address, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s dedication to restoring normalcy and progress in Manipur. As part of the celebration, Singh hoisted the national flag, and cultural dances were performed to mark the occasion.
In recognition of excellence in police training, the Chief Minister awarded the Union Home Minister’s Medal to four officers and personnel, while the march past included contingents from BSF, CRPF, and other security and educational institutions.

The event was attended by Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, Cabinet Ministers, Rajya Sabha MP Maharajah Leishemba Sanajaoba, MLAs, and top civil and police officials.
