Imphal: Amid allegations of various crimes and atrocities committed by different armed organisations and anti-social elements, the Manipur government Thursday sought the assistance of the Assam Rifles to maintain law and order situation in the state.
The assistance was sought a few hours later the Manipur police department accused the ‘Arambai Tenggol’, a radical Meitei group, of taking laws into their hands following the kidnap and assault of one police officer on Tuesday evening.
“If the situation gets out of hand, they have no other choice, but to seek support from the other central security forces and this will not be a desirable one for everyone,” IK Muivah, IPS, IGP said in a press briefing on Thursday morning.
At least six district magistrates including Imphal West, Thoubal, Tengnoupal, Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Kangpokpi sought the services of Assam Rifles with ‘immediate effect’ to assist the civil authority to maintain peace and bring a sense of security and confidence among the people of the districts.
Interestingly, these districts are the most affected areas due to the current unrest prevailing in the state over the last 10 months.
