Imphal: The Governor of Manipur, Lakhsman Prasad Acharya, extended warm greetings to the people of Manipur, especially married women, on the occasion of Ningol Chakkouba. This beloved festival of the Meitei community is celebrated annually with great joy and signifies deep family bonds.
In his message, Governor Acharya highlighted that Ningol Chakkouba is observed on the second day of the New Moon in the Manipuri month of Hiyangei (October-November). On this day, married sisters are invited by their brothers to enjoy a feast at their parental home and are presented with “Dakshina.”
The Governor noted, “This festival is celebrated by all Meitei families, both rich and poor, creating nostalgic and intimate moments that strengthen the bond of love between brothers and sisters. It plays a vital role in preserving the social fabric of the community.”
Governor Acharya also remarked that it is heartening to see other communities in Manipur embracing and celebrating the spirit of Ningol Chakkouba, which he praised as a positive development. He urged everyone to celebrate the festival in its true spirit of unity and togetherness.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh also extended his greetings, underscoring Manipur’s rich natural beauty and vibrant, multi-ethnic society. “Ningol Chakkouba,” he said, “is one of the most significant festivals in Manipur, celebrating the unbreakable bond of love between brother and sister. It reaffirms parental care and affection for married daughters and promotes social harmony through the sharing of blessings.”
The Chief Minister expressed hope that Ningol Chakkouba would inspire all to strengthen unity and togetherness. “On this auspicious occasion, let us renew our commitment to unity and harmony among all communities in the State,” he added.
