Imphal: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee has sought Rs 200 crore as immediate relief from Centre to rehabilitate the hailstorm affected people.
The devastating hail storm with strong wind last Sunday spell damaged nearly 20,000 houses across the state’s 16 districts.
As stated by Chief Minister N Biren Singh earlier, Imphal West district has suffered the most damage in terms of house damage (6055) followed by Imphal East (5600).
The State government also sanctioned Rs 6.9 crore for immediate relief of the affected people.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, Keisham Meghachandra, President, MPCC, highlighted that the people of Manipur have not yet experienced a natural disaster of such magnitude, which has damaged thousands of houses, affecting lakhs of people in the state.
Urging the Prime Minister to declare the present situation in Manipur a national disaster, Meghachandra also sought a minimum of Rs 200 crore for the affected people in a time-bound manner, in the larger interest of the people of the state.
The Congress lawmaker along with senior party leaders also inspected a few damaged houses at Langthabal, under Naoriya Pakhanglakpa constituency in Imphal West on Friday.
