Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for announcing the reduction in areas covered by AFSPA in Manipur, Assam and Nagaland.
Biren said, “Considering the sentiment of the people of Manipur, PM Narendra Modi has decided to reduce disturbed areas under Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Manipur.”
He added, “This historic decision is a result of the robust development and improved security situation under various initiatives taken up by PM Narendra Modi in Manipur. With the decision to reduce disturbed areas under AFSPA in Manipur, Manipur is marching towards a new era of peace, prosperity and development. ”
Imphal Municipal Areas is the only region in Manipur where there is no AFSPA. In 2004 following the alleged rape and murder of Th Manorama by personnel of 17 Assam Rifles in Manipur, AFSPA was withdrawn from the Municipal Areas. The PM has announced to lift AFSPA from six districts of Manipur.Â
