Imphal: Manipur government is planning to complete some projects and hand them over to the people by next year, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said on Thursday.
Biren inspected the catchment areas of Singda Dam, the ropeway site at Marjing Hill, and the Water and Amusement Park at Thenguchingin. The Chief Minister said the government was able to complete projects like Kangla Nongpok Thong, the Polo Statue at Marjing, and Olympian Park, among others.
N. Biren Singh said the government is concerned about the shortage of water. Singda Dam has dried up, and people are facing water scarcity, especially in Imphal. The government is trying to divert water from the Thoubal Project and is expecting rain to solve the water crisis, he added.
Siltation caused by deforestation in the catchment area at Singda Dam has become a serious issue, and now the priority is to clear the silt, he said.
He said that other than stationing police personnel in the area, fencing and tree plantation drives will be taken up in the catchment area.
At Marjing Hill, construction of a ropeway is underway, and we are targeting to complete it by December this year, the Chief Minister said.
N. Biren Singh further stressed the importance of preserving forest covers and said we cannot blame nature for the destruction due to heavy storms and heat waves. It is all our own doing, he said, making an appeal to the people for mass tree planting.
Stating that the government will be taking up a mass tree planting drive in the state, he appealed to the people to support the effort to plant trees to counter climate change and said we can lessen the effects of climate change to some extent by planting more trees in our hills.
