Imphal: Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Monday inaugurated the Institute Building of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) at Kasom Khullen in Kamjong District through video conferencing from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.

The event, organized by the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT), marked another step in the state government’s efforts to strengthen the education sector.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens and the pursuit of inclusive development to foster unity across the state. He reflected on the “Go to Hills Mission,” launched in March 2017 to address developmental disparities, and its complementary initiative, the “Go to Villages Mission,” which has brought essential services directly to rural areas.

The newly inaugurated DIET building, constructed at a cost of approximately ₹5.61 crore, underscores the government’s focus on improving educational infrastructure despite financial constraints. Singh emphasized the importance of the STAR Education programme, which has significantly enhanced teaching methods among trained educators.

He also announced plans to establish modernized healthcare facilities in the hill districts and acknowledged the improvement in road connectivity between Imphal and Kasom Khullen. Travel time has reduced from 7-8 hours to just 1.5 hours, a development he credited to the government’s sustained efforts.

While expressing regret for not being able to attend the event in person due to the prevailing law and order situation, the Chief Minister urged officials to ensure proper use and maintenance of the new facility. He also assured action on addressing staff shortages and other challenges in DIET centers across the state.

Education Minister Th. Basanta Kumar reiterated the government’s commitment to establishing one DIET in every district. Of the nine operational DIETs, four now have dedicated institute buildings. He requested the Chief Minister’s support in filling vacant positions to enhance their functionality.

The inauguration was attended by Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing, Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam, Patsoi MLA Sapam Kunjakeswor, Education Commissioner H. Gyan Prakash, SCERT officials, and other dignitaries. Deputy Commissioner of Kamjong District Rangnai Rang Peter and district administration officials participated from Kasom Khullen.
