Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has cancelled his proposed tour to Churachandpur district amid reports of sporadic disturbances in a few areas.
Meanwhile, the district administrations of Churachandpur and Pherzawl have suspended mobile internet services with immediate effect to maintain the law and order situation and curb the spread of misinformation on social media platforms in the two adjoining districts.
The Chief Minister was supposed to inaugurate an open gym at the PT Sports Complex, New Lamka, in Churachandpur. However, the gym was allegedly burned down by unknown miscreants on Thursday night.
Earlier, various organisations based in Churachandpur had called for a shutdown during the visit of the Chief Minister. The district administration has also imposed prohibitory orders in the district.
The government’s decision to protect reserved forest areas was anti-tribal, the organisations said. The Manipur government has cracked down against the planting of poppy plants in forest areas.
Reacting to Thursday’s incident that set ablaze an open gym in Churachandpur, N Biren Singh said that carrying out mischievous instances by unknown miscreants is a normal issue as miscreants are everywhere nowadays.
