Imphal: National Sports Day was celebrated across the country in honor of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, with the aim of inspiring and supporting young athletes, said Chief Minister N. Biren Singh this evening.
The Chief Minister spoke as the Chief Guest at the National Sports Day event held at Hiyai Adventure Club, Imphal, organized by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Manipur. Commending young talents in the sports field, he emphasized that the essence of sports lies not just in winning, but in active participation and the spirit of sportsmanship.
Highlighting the importance of environmental conservation, the Chief Minister expressed concern over the increasing natural calamities resulting from human negligence. He mentioned the state’s potential for wind energy production, as discussed in a recent Power Department review meeting, and announced plans to install solar pumps at approximately 68 locations to aid farmers in minor irrigation.
The Chief Minister also outlined various schemes available under MANIREDA for solar lighting systems, encouraging citizens to apply for these government welfare programs and benefit from them. He called on people from all walks of life to act responsibly in their fields, contribute collectively to restoring peace and normalcy, and support the state’s progressive development.
In his presidential speech, YAS Minister Govindas Konthoujam shared that an interdepartmental tournament was organized this year, which will become an annual calendar event starting next year, as directed by the Chief Minister. He expressed confidence that the state will continue to produce renowned athletes and praised the Chief Minister for his commitment to upgrading outdated sports equipment with modern alternatives, potentially starting this year.
The YAS Minister also announced the formation of consultative teams comprising experts in various sports disciplines suited to the physical attributes of the people of the state, further encouraging youth participation in sports.
The event was graced by the presence of Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh, Minister Kashim Vashum, Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, several MLAs, officials from the YAS department, Olympian Mirabai Chanu, Judoka Shushila Devi Likmabam, and other prominent sportspersons from the state. Additionally, folk artist Benita Laishram performed during the program.
