Manipur CM leads the House in applauding Mirabai Chanu

Manipur Chief Minister and leader of the Manipur State Legislative Assembly, N Buren Singh, on Thursday shared the good news of Saikhom Mirabi Chanu winning the Sportsstar of the Year (Female) for the year 2022 award on the floor of the house.

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister and leader of the Manipur State Legislative Assembly, N Buren Singh, on Thursday shared the good news of Saikhom Mirabi Chanu winning the Sportstar of the Year (Female) for the year 2022 award on the floor of the house. 

The announcement of the Chief Minister was greeted heartily by all the members of the house present with thumping desks.

As a mark of appreciation for her achieving yet another milestone, Biren Singh announced that the state government has earmarked Rs 1 crore each for the financial years 2022–23 and 2023–24 for the Saikhom Mirabai Fitness Centre at Nongpok Kakching.

Informing the House, how the state government has been showing its appreciation to sportspersons who have brought laurels to the state and the nation, he recalled how MC Mary Kom was honoured with the title ‘Meethoi Leima’ on her winning the world title for the sixth time. 

At the Sportstar Aces Awards 2022 event, which was held at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai on Saturday, Mirabai Chanu also won the Sportswoman of the Year (Individual Sports) award, which she shared with Lovlina Borgohain, the 2020 Tokyo boxing bronze medalist.

Chopra, the reigning Olympic javelin champion, was adjudged “Sportstar of the Year (Male)’ 2022 at the same event.

The Sportstar Aces Awards 2022 were decided by a jury of a galaxy of India’s sporting stars, comprising cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, former India hockey captain M. M. Somaya, chess great Viswanathan Anand, former India football skipper Bhaichung Bhutia, and Olympians Anjali Bhagwat and Aparna Popat.
