Agartala: The lone Congress MLA in 60-member Tripura legislative assembly Sudip Roy Barman abstained from voting in the by-election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat on Thursday.

As many as 36 BJP legislators, 7 MLAs of BJP’s ally in the government IPFT, and 15 CPI-M MLAs have supposed to exercise their franchise in the by-election, which was left vacant in June this year after Rajya Sabha MP Dr Manik Saha resigned and became Chief Minister of the state.

The BJP candidate former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has been nominated by BJP as its candidate in the by-poll while veteran CPI-M leader, former finance minister, and sitting MLA Bhanu Lal Saha contested as the left-front nominee, and in an obvious manner, BJP candidate Deb will win the elections.

Congress MLA Sudip Roybarman said Tripura Pradesh Congress President Birjit Sinha in a letter on Wednesday communicated the party’s decision that since Congress has no candidate in the Rajya Sabha election, he was asked to abstain from voting.
