Bengaluru: The JDS released its second list of 49 candidates on Friday. Former minister HD Revanna’s wife Bhavani Revanna has been omitted from contesting the Hassan seat.
Bhavani was a ticket aspirant for Hassan, but the JDS fielded HS Swaroop instead. He is son of HS Prakash, a four-time MLA from Hassan. He recently passed away.
The party has given Swaroop the ticket to capitalise on the sympathy vote after the demise of his father.
In a dramatic turn of events, YSV Datta, who had earlier quit JDS and joined Congress, returned back to his old party after he was denied a ticket by the Congress to contest from Kadur. Datta returned to the JDS, using his good rapport with HD Revanna.
JDS had declared the names of 93 candidates for the election in its first list released in December last year. The party fielded Kumaraswamy from Channapatna constituency, which is roughly 60 kilometres from Bengaluru.
JDS also fielded Kumaraswamy’s son, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, from Ramanagara constituency.
Nikhil earlier contested as an MP from Mandya and lost to independent candidate and yesteryear actress Sumalatha. Kumaraswamy’s wife, HD Anita, who was serving as Ramanagara MLA, vacated the seat for her son.
The second list includes names of: Sourabh Anand Chopra (Savadatti), Manohar Tahsildar (Hangal), Veerabharaiah (Hubballi East), Suraj Soni Nayak (Kumta), Nagendra Naik (Bhatkal), HP Swaroop (Hassan), A Manju (Arkalgud), YSV Datta (Kadur), and HK Kumaraswamy (Sakleshpur).
