Jayanti Patnaik passed away

She was also the first Odia woman to become the President of the All India Mahila Congress.

Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader, first woman Parliament member from Odisha, a good orator, eminent translator, and wife of former Odisha Chief Minister Janaki Ballav Patnaik Jayanti Patnaik passed away on Wednesday night due to old age-related illness at her residence here.

She was 90.

Her son Prithvi Ballav Patnaik, daughter-in-law Sasmita Patnaik, eldest daughter Sudatta Patnaik, son-in-law Soumya Ranjan Patnaik and other family members including her grandsons and daughters were present by her side when she breathed her last.

Family sources said her last rites would be performed at Swargadwar in Puri on Thursday.

President Draupadi Murmu, Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Sarat Patnaik, former OPCC President Niranjan Patnaik, members of the Odisha Council of Ministers and several Congress leaders BJP National Vice President Baijayanat Panda condoled the death and expressed their profound grief over the demise of Jayanti Patnaik.

Jayanti Patnaik was born in Aska in Ganjam district on April 7, 1932. She had completed her Matriculation from Harihar Bidyapeeth, Aska, graduation from Sailabala Women’s College Cuttack, and Post graduation from Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai.

She was married to eminent Political leader Janaki Ballav Patnaik in 1953.

Late Jayanti Patnaik was elected to Parliament four times — thrice to Lok Sabha and once to Rajya Sabha.

She was elected to Parliament as the first woman from the Cuttack Lok Sabha constituency in 1981. Later she was elected again from Cuttack in 1984 and in 1998 from Berhampur Lok Sabha Constituency. She was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1996.

Late Patnaik was the first Chairperson of the National Mahila Commission. She was the Chairperson of the Commission from February 1992 to January 1995.

She was also the first Odia woman to become the President of the All India Mahila Congress.

She was in charge of the Mahila Congress from 1988 to 1990.

She was the Editor of Odia magazine Paurusha and was very popular as a translator for her successful translation of Krishana Avtar authored by K M Munshi. In 1996 she was conferred

with the prestigious ‘’Mahila Gourav ‘’ award instituted by the Institute of Economic Studies, Delhi.
