Shillong: Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday said an investigation is on into an alleged attempt to rape on Khasi ladies by Assam police in West Khasi Hills district.

Rymbui was replying to a query raised by lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) legislator, Adelbert Nongrum during the Question Hour in the assembly.

Meghalaya police have registered a case in Nongstoin police station and investigation is on, he said in his reply to Nongrum’s query on the action taken against the three Assam police, who have been identified by the victims.

“I cannot give any timeline as collection of evidence will happen after which charge sheet will be submitted,” Rymbui said.

The Home Minister said the distance of the incident took place from nearest police outpost is 2 km from Langpih anti-dacoity camp.

On Nongrum’s demand for the government to take up the matter seriously, the minister said, “It is the endeavour of the state government to see that the security of the people (residing along the interstate border)is protected within the state.”
