Imphal: Continuing the deportation of illegal immigrants, the Government of Manipur has deported 38 Myanmar nationals including 11 children through the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Moreh on Tuesday.
With this action, a total of 115 illegal Myanmar migrants, including women and children, have been deported since March 8.
The deported individuals were handed over safely to Myanmar authorities by Indian Immigration Officers stationed at ICP Moreh, officials reported.
The Myanmar nationals were apprehended for entering the State/Country illegally under the Foreigners Act, of 1946. During their stay at jail/detention centres and children’s homes, as applicable, the Myanmar nationals were taken proper care of and provided with all basic amenities and medical facilities.
The deportation process was carried out in coordination with Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and security forces.Â
The State Government remains committed to identifying and deporting illegal immigrants to ensure border and national security, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stated on his X account.
Earlier, Biren Singh noted that although India is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has provided shelter and aid to those fleeing Myanmar’s crisis on humanitarian grounds with a systematic approach.
Many Myanmar nationals fled to Manipur and its neighbouring state of Mizoram after the military junta seized power in Myanmar on February 1, 2021.
Reports indicate that nearly 8,000 Myanmarese have sought refuge in Manipur’s Tengnoupal, Chandel, Churachandpur, and Kamjong districts.
