Kolkata: Trinamool Congress on Tuesday described as a “sick joke” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement that 133 people from poll violence-hit West Bengal have taken shelter in Dhubri district in his state.

“@himantabiswa’s refuge offer is a sick joke when he ignores the pathetic conditions of detainees in Assam’s detention camps. How is that not human rights violation? ” asked Trinamool Congress spokesman Kunal Ghosh.

Accusing Sarma of raising a “false alarm”, State Minister and Trinamool leader Shashi Panja retorted that Sarma should first consider the fate of Assam residents rendered stateless because of the implementation of the National Register for Citizens (NRC).

“Biswa Sarma must be nauseated from the dizzying heights of self-righteousness and misplaced moral superiority! Before raising a false alarm and creating a sense of panic, he should consider the fate of the 1.9 million residents of Assam who were rendered stateless due to NRC, ” Panja shot back.

The Assam Chief Minister earlier stated, ” Yesterday, 133 individuals who feared for their lives due to violence in the panchayat election in West Bengal sought refuge in Dhubri District of Assam. We have provided them with shelter in a relief camp, as well as food and medical assistance. “

Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari thanked Sarma for providing relief to the “tormented” opposition party Karyakartas of WB, especially those from BJP,

Adhikaris aid the opposition activists in Bengal “time and again are subjected to poll-related violence and being in close proximity to the State of Assam, they find it safe to cross over with their families for their safety.”

Meanwhile, the TMC secured a massive lead, winning 1218 Gram Panchayats out of 3317, while BJP was a distant second grabbing 288.
