Imphal: With the honor of having his first-ever retrospective at the 5th Indian Documentary Film Festival of Bhubaneswar (IDFFB 2024), Manipuri filmmaker Haobam Paban Kumar has firmly established himself as a key figure in Manipuri cinema, receiving recognition both nationally and globally. This retrospective presents an opportunity to revisit his two-decade-long cinematic journey and appreciate the significant impact of his unique voice in filmmaking.

The festival, organized by the Film Society of Bhubaneswar from September 26-29 at the Odissi Research Centre Auditorium, will feature critically acclaimed films screened at prestigious festivals such as Berlin, Sundance, Rotterdam, IDSFFK (Kerala), Busan, New York, among others.

Hailing from Manipur, a region often marginalized in the broader narrative of Indian cinema, Haobam Paban Kumar has crafted a distinctive space through his fearless storytelling and authenticity. His films offer a window into the socio-political realities of Manipur, a state grappling with insurgency, ethnic tensions, and political unrest. Yet, his stories transcend regional boundaries, echoing universal themes of human perseverance, struggle, and hope.

Paban Kumar began his cinematic career with documentaries, a format he used to deeply explore the lived realities of Manipur. His 2006 documentary, AFSPA 1958, is a landmark film that drew international attention to the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in the region. Winning the FIPRESCI Award at the 9th Mumbai International Film Festival, the film is a searing portrayal of human rights abuses experienced by the people of Manipur under the law. This documentary laid the foundation for his cinematic approach—amplifying unheard voices and shedding light on difficult truths.

As Paban Kumar transitioned to feature films, he continued to challenge norms. His debut feature, Loktak Lairembee(Lady of the Lake), won the National Film Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation at the 64th National Film Awards, along with the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film at the 2016 Mumbai International Film Festival. Set on the iconic Loktak Lake, the film explores the plight of a fishing community living on floating huts, or phumdis, while juxtaposing the lake’s serene beauty with the harsh realities of its inhabitants. The international success of the film brought global attention to Manipuri cinema, revealing the rich cultural and natural heritage of the region to wider audiences.

Paban Kumar’s films are more than narratives; they are potent commentaries on Manipur’s socio-political and cultural fabric. His work reflects a profound empathy for his subjects and a dedication to preserving the cultural identity of his homeland. Through cinema, he bridges the gap between Manipur and the rest of the world, dismantling stereotypes and offering a nuanced depiction of life in the region.

The retrospective at IDFFB 2024 stands as a testament to Haobam Paban Kumar’s contributions to both Indian and international cinema. It acknowledges his distinct voice, one that continues to challenge, inspire, and provoke thought. His films are not only works of art but also instruments of change, encouraging audiences to confront difficult realities and admire the resilience and spirit of the Manipuri people.

As his work is celebrated at this esteemed festival, it is evident that Paban Kumar has elevated Manipuri cinema and become a beacon for independent filmmakers worldwide. His dedication to telling authentic stories, boldness in addressing challenging subjects, and cinematic mastery make him a vital and influential voice in contemporary cinema.
