Imphal: The 2024 “Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day” was observed on Monday at Hotel Imphal, North AOC. The event was jointly organized by the National Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Programme (NIDDCP), the National Health Mission (NHM), Manipur, and the Directorate of Health Services, Manipur.
Health & Family Welfare and IPR Minister, Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh, attended as the chief guest, emphasizing the importance of consuming iodized salt to prevent various health disorders. He noted that many health issues, including thyroid disorders, stem from iodine deficiency, which can be avoided by raising awareness and ensuring the quality of edible salt available in the market.
The minister also highlighted the crucial role of food safety in monitoring the quality of food items in the market, calling for regular inspections of both consumable and non-consumable products. He stressed the need for proper classification and underscored the importance of coordinated efforts among health sector officials. Dr. Ranjan urged Food Safety officials and staff to carry out their responsibilities with diligence and strict adherence to standards.
As part of the event, an awareness booklet on iodine deficiency disorders and their prevention was released by the chief guest.
The event was also attended by Hungyo Worshang, Special Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Manipur; Dr. O. Sanahanbi Devi, Director of Health Services, Manipur; and Dr. M. Dinesh Singh, State Mission Director, NHM, Manipur, who participated as president and guests of honor, respectively.
