Libreville: Presidential, parliamentary and local elections are set to be held in Gabon on Saturday with the army deployed to bolster security during the voting.
Ali Bongo Ondimba, the incumbent Gabonese president and leader of the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), will face 18 other candidates in his run for the third term.
As for the upcoming parliamentary and local elections in Gabon, Bongo’s PDG currently holds strong majorities in the country’s parliament, which makes the party the most likely favorite.
The previous presidential election, which took place in the Central African nation in 2016, was marked by mass protests as Bongo’s main opponent, Gabonese diplomat and politician Jean Ping, failed to secure the majority of votes with a margin of less than 2%.
